Blood Will Tell: The Murder Trials of T. Cullen Davis
Published in Hardcover by Harcourt (May, 1979)
Author: Gary Cartwright
Average review score:

Short Shrift to an Important Factor
This book detailing the Fort Worth murders at Cullen Davis's mansion presented excellent background information in every respect but one, and that was Davis's life in college at Texas A&M. Cartwright briefly mentioned that Davis had been in the Corps of Cadets there, and later during one of the trials cussed out the press (explaining, "That's how Texas Aggies say goodnight") -- but there was really no actual detail about Davis's life as an Aggie. What outfit was he in? Who was his fish old lady? Was he a waiter at Duncan, or a member of the fish Drill Team? What position did he hold as a sophomore -- was he the guidon bearer? How about his time as an upperclassman, junior and senior? Was he a first sergeant or commander? Was he a Ross Volunteer? In which dorms did he reside? Why were there no photos of him in uniform, such as a senior boot picture?

These years comprised the foundation of Davis's life, the crux of his persona, yet they were completely neglected in the telling of his story. Let us hope future editions of this book rectify that omission, and provide background about Cullen's formative period in the Corps at Aggieland.

Outstanding Book!
This was a very good book on the T. Cullen Davis murder trials.
Davis was accused of killing his step daughter and the boyfriend
of his estranged wife Priscilla. Cullen Davis was a multiwealthy
oil field person. After being arrested thw trial was granted a change of venue to Amarillo. Here the scene was taken over by legendary trial lawyer Racehorse Haynes. Haynes proceeded to win an acquittal for T. Cullen Davis. This was noted as being a spectacular trial Davis was again arrested for conspiracy to commit murder once again on his estranged wife and a presiding judge. Davis was put on trial twice before being acquitted. This
book gives excellent detail on these outrageous action that occured in Texas. This book is hard to put down. You will enjoy it.

Blue Ribbons for Juliet

Blue Ribbons For Juliet
A marvelous story for children and grown-ups alike. Anybody who has been thrown into a strange new situation will sympathize with both heros-Tristan the boy and Juliet, the English Toy Spaniel puppy. Tristan has arrived in LA to stay with his uncle after his parents' divorce. Juliet is in her first dog show, and if she loses Tristan's uncle, Grady, may lose his kennel.

Both face their daunting challenges head on, teaching each other valuable lessons along the way. The dialogue between Tristan and the dog is perfect and will delight children. It's a good story with which to tuck a kid into bed, with great lessons about being different, self reliance, honor and integrity.

I would recommend this story for parents of discouraged children or children caught in difficult transitions, although all children will enjoy this story of Tristan and spunky Juliet. There are things they need to know to become one of life's winners, and this book has some of the those steppingstones. I anxiously await more children's prose from Marilyn Lowery.

What a marvelous book!
Absolutely wonderful for young people in the throes of major, and frightening, life changes. Indeed, for Tristan, the hero of the story, meeting Juliet was life changing.

The plot presents many challenges for, both, the boy who must find a life far from all that is familiar, and the English Toy Spaniel who carries the survival of Whispering Pines Kennel on her young shoulders.

The cast of characters, both human and canine, heroes and villains, is always engaging. From Grey Thunder, a magical Irish Wolfhound, both Tristan and Juliet learn the secret of thinking winning thoughts and other valuable lessons. Highly reccommended for any young person who has ever loved a dog.

Brian's Bird

Authors: Patricia Anne Davis and Layne Johnson
Average review score:

A must have for ANY child
I purchased this book for my six year old nephew who is blind and a bird lover. This book is incredible! The illustrations are wonderful and the story focuses on family togetherness, not just blindness. It is a wonderful book for siblings with differences, any child really.

Brian's Bird: Beautiful Story & Images
Brian's Bird is a wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated picture book. Author Patricia Davis tells a simple direct story while creating many opportunities for visual images. Layne Johnson's striking and colorful photo-like pictures jump to life off the page.

This story of a blind boy who delights in his new pet parakeet is ideal for young readers. The book treats Brian's blindness in a positive manner. The scene in which he uses his sense of touch to solve the mystery of his birthday present gives young readers the opportunity to gain understanding of the special skills of a blind person. The description of how the bird's feet feel on Brian's finger is delightful.

Brian exhibits patience and persistence in teaching his bird. There is humor in the story, as when Brian hears someone calling his name, only to realize it is the bird. Once again, the author highlights the use of an alternate sense.

Brian's brother presents challenges for Brian from the opening pages of the book. Indeed, his brother's actions lead to the bird's flight from the house. The boys work together to solve the problem and sibling teamwork wins the day.

The book presents many opportunities for an adult reading this story to a young child to discuss a variety of issues. The book is also appropriate for young readers up to age 8 or 9 to read on their own.

Bus Fare to Kentucky: The Autobiography of Skeeter Davis

Triumph over Tragedy........
This county star can write! She takes us through the most intimate details of her life and shows us that faith and trust prevail in her life. Bad marriages, a lousy childhood, a bizarre entry into country music, the death of her singing partner and a brush with cancer are all detailed. I wish that she would include if paperback comes out a chapter about her current cancer struggles as she is a real trooper, I wonder why the country music community has not grabbed this book? Could it be that Ralph Emery's influence on Nashville( she has nothing nice to say about him) kept it and she off of TNN.Every bit as good as Coal Miner's Daughter. This would be a great movie.

Excellent country music story
This great star of the Grand Ole Opry has written one of the alltime great country music autobiographies - moving, amusing, utterly interesting. Ranks right alongside Loretta's COAL MINERS DAUGHTER and Tammy's STAND BY YOUR MAN as one of the great country queen confessionals. You will end up loving this wonderful lady if you don't already!!

Change Your Life with Martial Arts
Published in Paperback by Blueberry Press (01 June, 2002)
Authors: Linda Davis Kyle, Guy Lancaster, Mindy Reed, Edward J. Jackowski, and Jerry L. Beasley
Average review score:

Self-improvement through learning self-defense
Written by health, fitness, and martial arts expert Linda Davis Kyle as a straightforward introduction to self-improvement through learning self-defense, Change Your Life With Martial Arts is a very thoroughly "reader friendly" guide to how martial arts can be employed to enhance daily life. This superbly presented, step-by-step instructional guide to finding the best martial arts school for oneself and one's family, how to guard against overtraining, and so much more, Change Your Life With Martial Arts is commended for providing a basic overview which is especially suited for newcomers to the exciting, physically and emotionally enhancing world of the martial arts.

Essetial Introduction to the Martial Arts
An Essential Introduction to the Martial Arts
Reviewer: Billie A. Williams from Bayfield, CO, United States
The wealth of information in Change Your Life with Martial Arts is sure to guide readers in choosing a martial art most suited to them.

In chapter one, author Linda Davis Kyle highlights a generous sampling from the vast array of martial arts and their founders or grandmasters, gives tidbits of the origins of the arts and how they may relate to each other, and annotates the references for each. She also summarizes the goals of a selection of the various martial arts and the qualities that each attempts to instill in their dedicated practitioners.

In chapter two, the author tells the benefits and rewards of martial arts no matter which one you choose. She says that "The martial arts nurture a fine balance of body and mind that helps to create physical endurance and mental ruggedness" and stresses that the aggression and violence sometimes portrayed in martial arts movies veers far from the traditions of being humble, honorable, respectful, responsible, and ethical, which are the true goals of martial arts practitioners.

In chapter three, Kyle takes readers through the process of selecting a teacher and suggests qualities to look for in the instructor and the school itself.

With appendixes that glimpse into the topics of overtraining and the impact of exercise on children and a list of directories, federations, institutions, and organizations associated with the various martial arts and suppliers of equipment, Kyle has prepared a user-friendly manual to help interested learners to get onto the right track to begin the study and practice of these ancient arts. The book also may serve more advanced martial artists by placing at their fingertips more than 70 other useful resources.
This book is not only for those looking to begin training in one of the martial arts for better physical and mental health, but also I would highly recommend Change Your Life with Martial Arts to those seeking a higher consciousness and inner peace, for as the author says, "The influence of martial arts overflows into every aspect of the practitioner's life."

This book is amazing, heartwarming and very special!
I came across this book in a library in Scotland, where I spent a year of my life, and was totally taken by it. Home again in Vienna I tried to obtain it in several bookstores but none of them had it. Then my sister brought it home from a visit to England and since then I've read it about a hundred times. I simply can't get enough of it. The characters are so real and special! On a recent visit to Scotland I also went to Kilchurn Castle and Loch Awe and it is just as described in the book, immensly beautiful! This book was worth every minute of your life, Mrs Davis!!!

Wonderful - brings Scotland to life
This book is absolutely wonderful. I've read it a number of times and passed it along to family and friends. On a recent trip to Scotland the highlight was seeing Kilchurn Castle, where much of the story is set. It was fantastic. And I could just see the Campbell clan living on the beautiful Loch Awe. The story is extra special because it is based on real people and around real events. Kathryn Lynn Davis brings it all to life.

The Choctaw Code
Good reading for impressinable youngsters. Issues dealing with integrity, clashing cultures and a man who chooses not to take the easy way out. Inspiring.

a good example of respecting values of different cultures
The Choctaw Code is one of my all time favorites and was an especially liked read aloud chapter book for my fifth grade students in Atoka, Oklahoma. Readers relate to the growing beautiful friendship between Jim and the boy and the values being taught by example of the Choctaw people's way of dealing with justice and life. The story paints a picture of unselfish communication between two people of two very different cultures. I am pleased that it is back in print.
